In Norfolk, data shows that more men commute by cycling than women, a trend reflected nationwide. Research by the London Cycling Campaign’s Women’s Network has explored the reasons behind this gap in the capital, but patterns of cycling are often highly place-specific. Understanding the situation in Norwich is therefore essential if meaningful progress is to be made in addressing local inequalities.
This audit aims to identify the barriers that women—here defined as women, girls and gender-diverse people—face when cycling in Norwich. To do this, we are running public events and an online survey to gather people’s experiences. This work will complement an on-the-ground audit assessing the city’s cycleways to understand how safe they feel, in terms of both physical and social safety.
